City of Segovia Advising on the building of nests to fit in the walls of varioushistorical buildings.
Built and located nest boxes for kestrels and owls in the field to help in rodent pest control.
During these projects we found that the previous criteria used to control the birds was
incorrect, for example:
- Metal spikes had been installed in the hollows and holes to discourage pigeons but these measures proved counterproductive.
- In historic buildings some of the holes had been plugged which resulted in the inability to understand how the buildings had been constructed.
We believe that the combination of good restoration techniques and measures to promote the presence of a variety of species of birds gives the various constructions a special character: These will become buildings in which birds and humans can coexist
and benefit each other.
In Segovia there is now a healthy colony of swifts in a walled water deposit plus a bird of prey nest box.
In the grounds of the city Hall there are now boxes for Kestrels and Owls as a pilot in pest control.
